Zac Efron takes on a new acting challenge in this summer’s ‘Charlie St. Cloud.’ Based on the best-selling book by Ben Sherwood, Efron re-teams with Burr Steers, his ’17 Again’ director, for a fantasy-romance tackling love and the after-life.
Efron plays the title character, a young man bound for college trying to juggle his own life, with taking care of his little brother, Sam. When is Sam is killed in a tragic car accident, Charlie is despondent with grief, until the ghost of Sam appears to him, giving them a second chance to stay together.
As Charlie begins to drift away from the rest of his life, determined to uphold the memory of his brother, he meets and falls for Tess (Amanda Crew), a sailor who is planning to travel around the world. Charlie becomes conflicted when he realizes that pursuing his one chance with Tess before she leaves forever means finally having to say goodbye to his brother’s spirit.
